When I was young, my dad (in the USAF) & I shared an interest in rockhounding. He would bring back rocks from wherever he was sent. On a trip back from Florida, he stopped at Mammoth Cave, I believe in KY. He brought me two large chunks of obsidean in royal blue and fire engine red. They were beautiful when you shone a flashlight through them. Dad was told it was native there and it was sold in gift shops all through the area.

Hi. I saw this b/c I have been searching to find out info about a lamp my grandmother gave me. She said one of my Uncles brought it back from the war (Vietnam perhaps?) I thought she said it was from Germany. But upon my search tonight the only close thing I have found is this http://www.theantiquetraders.com/?p=461
The one I have is round, looks very similar, the colored glass is identical to the one posted here on your site. I can email you a picture if you like.
I just really want to know more about it, where's it's from and what it's made of.

This looks like slag glass or old glass that came from furnaces and placed in a metal grid. It is a wonderful piece, but as far as obsidian, I am sorry that I would not say that it was, based on the clarity and colors.
